THINGS ABOVE.

“Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things.” Colossians 3:2 (NIV)

It’s finally Saturday—my day to relax! But first, the car needs to be washed and vacuumed. Oh, and the kitchen faucet is dripping. I should check on that in case there’s a leak…and a subsequent need to visit the hardware store. There’s an important NBA game on at 6 tonight. Must remember to watch it! And it’s time to clean out the garage; it looks like it exploded with Christmas decoration boxes. That reminds me, I need to return a few gifts to the mall…maybe I can do that on the way to the carwash…or the hardware store...if there is indeed a leak in the kitchen. Oh and the back patio is full of leaves and needs to be swept. Must get to that sometime today.

Sometimes it seems like we just go from one day to the next filling up every moment with “pressing” matters. Life flies by, and we get caught up in its whirlwind. All too often the first things to go are the very things that keep us focused on eternal matters—things like spending time with our heavenly Father.

Even Jesus would occasionally slip away from the crowds or the business of His life to spend time with His Father (Luke 5:16). So if Jesus needed time with the Father, then I suspect I do, too.

Sure, getting the garage cleaned is important, and so is the NBA game, but sometimes all of these “important” things can swallow up a whole day. Oftentimes I get to the end of the day and realize I haven’t talked to my heavenly Father one time! That’s when I know I need to get my perspective realigned and set my thoughts on things above.

So today I’m resolved to spend some time with God first. Later I’ll tackle my “To Do” list…after I make time with my Heavenly Father a priority.

THINK ABOUT IT…

  • What does this devotional reveal to me about God?

  • What does this devotional reveal to me about myself?

  • Based on this, what changes do I need to make?

  • What is my prayer for today?
